Within your limits
Know your health before climbing; those with heart or blood-pressure conditions especially should assess whether it suits them. Set a sensible goal, do not force the summit, and rest or turn back when it is taxing.
Avoid slips and falls
- Wear non-slip, well-fitting hiking shoes; slow down and hold the rails on slippery spots;
- On descents lower your centre of gravity with small steps; do not walk side by side or rush on narrow paths;
- Take extra care in rain or snow or when icy, and adjust the plan if needed.
Rain and thunder
- Watch the weather and on-site notices; in heavy rain or thunder, avoid ridges, tall trees and open ground;
- Carry a raincoat; mountain floods come fast in the rainy season, so never linger or wade in gullies or river beds.
Emergencies
- Go with others and keep in touch; carry water and common medicines;
- At breathlessness or dizziness, stop to rest at once and seek help from on-site staff if severe;
- Descend before dark and avoid staying on the trails at night.
Note
Safety first, experience second; do the homework and the climb ends in delight.
