The taste of the hills
The area around Fanjingshan has produce and cooking with a wild, rustic flavour; sampling local fare after the climb is an unforgettable part of the trip. The following are common types — take seasonal and actual supply as they are.
What to try
- Wild vegetables: seasonal greens and mountain bamboo shoots, simply cooked to bring out their flavour;
- Bean dishes and pickles: homely tofu and pickles, good with rice;
- Local tea: the hills grow tea — a cup refreshes, and it makes a fine gift;
- Home-style stews: slow-simmered pots on an earth stove, good for replenishing energy after the climb.
Eating with confidence
- Choose clean restaurants with clearly marked prices;
- Order to need and avoid waste; the sensitive-stomached should watch spicy and raw-cold food;
- Do not eat too much before the climb and hydrate along the way.
Note
Diets differ — sample in moderation; those with allergies should mind the ingredients, with safety and health first.
