Why the produce here is special

The Fanjingshan area is high, cloud-wrapped and has distinctive soil and climate, nurturing many local products. Good land and water give good tea — and good country flavours.

Tea and tea culture

The area around Fanjingshan is known tea country, with the tea from the Tuanlong area especially famous. Grown among cloud and mist, the buds are plump and the brew fragrant and full-bodied. If you love tea, take some home as a gift and learn about picking and making in the tea hills.

Purple-robe jade-belt stone

A local ornamental stone named for its alternating purple and jade-white bands. Carved into inkstones and ornaments, its colours are elegant and it makes a distinctive souvenir.

Country flavours

  • Shefan: glutinous rice steamed with cured pork, wild scallion and dried tofu — fragrant and seasonal;
  • Rice tofu: made from rice milk, smooth and good either chilled or hot;
  • Mushrooms, cured meats and Tujia dishes are also common, with plain, honest flavours.

Buying tips

  • Buy tea and stone carvings from reputable sellers and check origin and grade;
  • For mushrooms and cured meats, mind shelf life and storage;
  • Buy sensibly and only what you need, and avoid carrying excess.

FAQ

What local products can I bring home?
Notable local products include tea (such as that from the Tuanlong area) and purple-robe jade-belt stone carvings; the tea is fragrant and the carvings elegant, both distinctive gifts. Buy from reputable sellers and check origin and grade.
Does Fanjingshan have a cableway, and must I take it?
Yes. The cableway runs from the mountainside up to the summit area and saves a lot of effort. Stronger hikers may use the trails, but they take much longer — choose according to your fitness.
What is the “Buddha’s halo” at Fanjingshan?
The Buddha’s halo is a rainbow ring that appears in the clouds opposite the sun after rain clears, with a figure at its center that moves as you move; in certain light a magnified projection — the “phantom” — may appear in thick mist. These are natural wonders of the mountain’s special weather.
How high is Fanjingshan? Will I get altitude sickness?
Fanjingshan’s highest point is about 2,572 m; the Red Cloud Golden Summit is about 2,336 m and the Old Golden Summit about 2,494 m. At this altitude obvious altitude sickness is uncommon, but the summit is about 8–10°C cooler and involves steps — pace yourself.
