Around the East Gate (recommended)

The East Gate area has Fanjingshan’s greatest concentration of lodging, from resorts to characterful guesthouses. By distance:

  • Core zone (within about 1 km of the East Gate): walk to the park, good for an early start and the first shuttle.
  • Outer zone (about 1–5 km): quieter, some resort-style lodging, most offering shuttle service.
  • Jiangkou county town: more dining and shopping, about 30–40 minutes’ drive from the East Gate — good if the gate area is full or you plan to stay longer nearby.

Booking tips

  • In peak season (summer holidays, National Day) good lodging is tight — book early, and for Golden Week even earlier.
  • Before booking, confirm whether the property offers a shuttle to the East Gate visitor center and its schedule.
  • Check the real distance to the East Gate on a map; prices vary by season — rely on live rates.

Around the West Gate (for hikers)

The West Gate area is less developed with fewer options, mainly serving hikers. Conditions are simpler; confirm rooms in advance.

A note on summit lodging

Summit lodging is very basic and mainly used by photographers shooting sunrise, sunset and stars. For conservation reasons, ordinary visitors are discouraged from staying on the mountain, and camping is not allowed inside. Our advice: stay near the East Gate and take the early shuttle and cableway up the next day — an equally good experience.

FAQ

How do I choose between the East and West Gates?
The East and West Gates lie in different directions, with different transport and cable-car or trail conditions; follow the day’s opening and booking. Choose the gate that is nearer or easier given your lodging, transport and stamina, and plan your trip and return around the gate you pick.
Can I camp at Fanjingshan?
As a World Natural Heritage site and ecological reserve, Fanjingshan generally does not allow casual camping, and overnight stays on trails and in the core area are even less advisable. Whether you may stay overnight or go up at night follows on-site rules and opening arrangements; for lodging, choose regular accommodation at the base or nearby and check specifics online before you go.
Are there hot springs or resorts near Fanjingshan?
The surroundings are mostly mountain homestays and inns, while hot springs and resorts vary by area. If you want a spa or comfortable lodging, check nearby options, prices and locations online before you go and fit them into your plan, going by actual operation.
What is the difference between the East and West Gates?
The East Gate (Jiangkou side) has a shuttle and cableway for an easier trip, suiting families, seniors, children and visitors with limited time. The West Gate (Yinjiang side) has no cableway and is a full hike of about 4–6 hours one way, suiting energetic hikers. The two gates are about 75 km apart.
