Why decide on your entrance first
Fanjingshan has two official entrances — the East Gate (Jiangkou side) and the West Gate (Yinjiang side). They are about 75 km apart and the visiting experience is completely different. Deciding which gate to use first sets your transport, lodging and schedule.
East Gate (Jiangkou side): the choice for most visitors
- Facilities: includes a sightseeing cableway.
- Route: ticket check → shuttle bus (~20 min) to the cableway lower station → cableway up (~20 min) → walkway (~30 min) to the core area.
- Best for: families, groups with seniors or children, limited time, sightseeing-first visitors.
- Amenities: visitor center, parking and dining are complete, with plenty of hotels and guesthouses.
West Gate (Yinjiang side): designed for hikers
- Facilities: no cableway.
- Route: a full hike of about 8,000 steps, usually 4–6 hours one way.
- Best for: experienced hikers, energetic younger visitors, travelers who want to experience primary forest in depth.
- Amenities: limited facilities and fewer lodging options, low commercialization.
A quick rule of thumb
- With seniors or children under 10 → East Gate only.
- Want to finish the core sights in one day → East Gate.
- Want a full hike and have the stamina → consider the West Gate.
The rest of this guide uses the East Gate as the main reference.
