Slowing down is a way to travel too
Fanjingshan is high and the route is long, and many people rush the itinerary and miss the ease of the mountain. If you have time, slow down: rest at a viewing platform or a mountain stop, sip hot tea, watch the cloud, let your body adjust to the altitude and let your eyes remember the view.
Resting on the mountain
- Pause where it is open: viewing platforms and rest stops have good views for a short break and photos;
- Refuel: carry some food and water and eat in good time rather than climbing on an empty stomach;
- A cup of tea: the area is rich in tea, and teahouses or speciality shops below the mountain serve local brews;
- Watch the clock: even while resting, keep an eye on your descent — the last cable car and shuttle will not wait.
Slow-travel advice
- Do not chase a tally of "check-ins" — pick a few sights you truly want and take your time;
- Chat with your companions and notice the plants and insects along the way — nature's gifts too;
- When the weather turns, rest and wait for the cloud to open — often with unexpected reward.
Note
After resting, take your rubbish with you and leave things as they were; the mountain is cold and windy and sitting long chills you, so keep warm. The joy of slow travel comes from ease — and from respect for the environment and the rules.
