A three-dimensional geology textbook

Fanjingshan sits where the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau meets the hills of western Hunan. It is one of the older landmasses in southern China to rise from the sea, preserving strata and landforms formed some one to 1.4 billion years ago. Isolated peaks, sheer cliffs and deep valleys — eons of weathering have carved its distinctive stone scenery.

Typical landforms

  • Stone pinnacle forests: near-horizontal metamorphic bedding and vertical joints gave rise, after collapse, to Mushroom Rock, Eagle Rock, the "Scroll of Ten Thousand Volumes" and General's Head;
  • Gorges and slot gorges: tectonics and water erosion cut deep, steep gorges;
  • A dome-shaped massif: huge relief makes a classic dome-like mountain ecosystem.

Water and waterfalls

Rivers radiate from the summit in many streams, earning the name "ninety-nine streams," and the drop forms many waterfalls. In the wet season the rushing streams and falls add life to this ancient massif.

Why it is worth learning about

With a little geology, what you see on the climb is not just "rocks" but a billion-year history of the Earth. Please do not chip, climb or remove rock samples, so these geological relics endure.

FAQ

Does Fanjingshan have a cableway, and must I take it?
Yes. The cableway runs from the mountainside up to the summit area and saves a lot of effort. Stronger hikers may use the trails, but they take much longer — choose according to your fitness.
What is the “Buddha’s halo” at Fanjingshan?
The Buddha’s halo is a rainbow ring that appears in the clouds opposite the sun after rain clears, with a figure at its center that moves as you move; in certain light a magnified projection — the “phantom” — may appear in thick mist. These are natural wonders of the mountain’s special weather.
How high is Fanjingshan? Will I get altitude sickness?
Fanjingshan’s highest point is about 2,572 m; the Red Cloud Golden Summit is about 2,336 m and the Old Golden Summit about 2,494 m. At this altitude obvious altitude sickness is uncommon, but the summit is about 8–10°C cooler and involves steps — pace yourself.
Is Fanjingshan hard to climb?
Via the East Gate you can use the shuttle and cable car — flexible, quicker and less demanding; but you still climb high-altitude steps after reaching the top, and the West Gate is a full hike of greater intensity. Choose by your group’s fitness and pace yourself.
