Double Ninth climb: enjoy autumn with the elders

Autumn at Its Best: Climb High with the Elders and Enjoy the Scenery

Climbing high on the Double Ninth Festival is a traditional custom. At this time of year, Fanjingshan enjoys crisp autumn air, and the mountain forests shift from green to yellow and then to red, with the layers of trees gradually taking on color — the perfect season for autumn viewing. Climbing high with the elders to enjoy the scenery is both pleasant and meaningful.

Because Fanjingshan has varied elevations and tree species, the timing of the color change differs from place to place, and the overall autumn color lasts for a period, so there is no need to worry about missing a single day. Autumn color is affected by the climate of the year, and conditions on the ground prevail; while enjoying the views, please care for the plants and do not pick branches or leaves, so that the beauty remains for more people to enjoy.

Choose the Right Viewing Spots and Times

  • Looking down from high places: Climbing high and gazing into the distance is the best way to feel the layers and grandeur of the forest in full color.
  • Along the trails: Walk slowly along the trails to see up close how the colors of the leaves and branches set off the mountain rocks.
  • Set against a sea of clouds: If you catch a clear morning with a sea of clouds, the colorful forest and the clouds in one frame have a charm all their own.

With crisp autumn air, it is best to enter the park early and stroll at a leisurely pace; the soft light of mid-morning is ideal for viewing and photography. The mountain is cold and windy, and it is chillier in the early morning and evening, so bring a jacket; travel outside peak times and book in advance, as weekends in high season are busier.

Traveling with Elders: Allow Plenty of Time for Pace and Care

Fanjingshan is high in elevation with steep trails. Before bringing elders along, please first learn about their physical condition; those with chronic conditions such as heart or blood pressure problems should especially assess in advance whether climbing is suitable. Go within your limits, and do not insist on reaching the summit.

  • Use the sightseeing buses and cableway as much as possible to reduce walking distance and climbing.
  • Travel outside peak times and enter the park early, avoiding midday and crowded periods to reduce queuing and standing for long stretches.
  • Walk at a steady, slow pace and rest often; carry water, regular medications and warm clothing.
  • Stay together the whole time and never leave anyone alone; agree on meeting points and keep in contact.
  • Hold on to each other and walk slowly on slippery spots, and remind each other to hold the railings at steps.
  • If shortness of breath, dizziness or other discomfort occurs, stop and rest at once, and seek help promptly if it is serious.

Keep the itinerary relaxed and allow plenty of time; when the elders enjoy themselves comfortably, the whole family can feel at ease. The mountain is windy and cold, so warmth is essential — safety first.

Capture the Autumn Scenes Along the Way

If you want to record images of the autumn scenery, at Hongyun Golden Summit you can shoot upward to capture the steepness of the lone peak soaring into the sky, or photograph the twin peaks and the sky bridge from the viewing platform on the opposite side; Mushroom Rock, in side-backlight, shows off its curious shape — broad on top and narrow below; from the top of Old Golden Summit you can look down over the mountains and the sea of clouds. Early morning and late afternoon offer soft light and fewer visitors, making them the best times for photos; a sea of clouds is often seen just after rain clears, a classic scene at Fanjingshan. A wide-angle lens suits the grand scenes of clouds and peak forests, while a medium-to-long telephoto lens can compress the layers; supplies on the mountain are limited, so bring enough batteries and memory cards, and when it is windy and slippery, take care to keep equipment from slipping or falling.
