Visit with respect

Fanjingshan has been a famous Buddhist mountain since ancient times, and its temples, statues and steles carry a deep cultural heritage. Visit with respect, follow the rules of the place and accord belief and culture their due regard.

Basic etiquette

  • Dress neatly and modestly; do not shout or play — keep quiet;
  • Do not touch statues, ritual objects or relics at will, and do not carve or scrawl in the halls;
  • Check whether photos are allowed and avoid using flash on statues.

Getting along with others

  • When worshippers are bowing, make way, do not disturb and do not crowd to photograph;
  • Be polite and patient when receiving guidance and commentary;
  • If joining related activities, do so in order as arranged on site.

Care for the monuments

Relics cannot be remade — do not pick, carve or damage them. Take away a civilised memory and leave the mountain's serenity.

FAQ

What etiquette should I observe when visiting the temples?
Visit with respect: dress neatly and modestly, keep quiet without shouting or playing, do not touch statues, ritual objects or relics at will or scrawl in the halls, and check whether photos are allowed, avoiding flash on statues. Make way for worshippers without disturbing or crowding to photograph, and be polite when receiving guidance.
Is Fanjingshan a Buddhist mountain? What temples are there?
Fanjingshan has been a Buddhist mountain since ancient times and is traditionally associated with Maitreya, with old temples, halls and cliff inscriptions among its religious sights, and twin shrines joined by a bridge on Red Cloud Golden Peak. Please respect the rules of religious sites: dress modestly, keep quiet and note on-site signs before photographing.
Does Fanjingshan have a cableway, and must I take it?
Yes. The cableway runs from the mountainside up to the summit area and saves a lot of effort. Stronger hikers may use the trails, but they take much longer — choose according to your fitness.
What is the “Buddha’s halo” at Fanjingshan?
The Buddha’s halo is a rainbow ring that appears in the clouds opposite the sun after rain clears, with a figure at its center that moves as you move; in certain light a magnified projection — the “phantom” — may appear in thick mist. These are natural wonders of the mountain’s special weather.
