When it is loveliest
Each autumn, as temperatures fall, Fanjingshan’s trees turn from green to gold and then to red, the woods tinting layer by layer. Colour changes differ by altitude and species, so the season lasts a while — there is no need to fear missing a single day.
Where to look
- From up high: climbing for a distant view best conveys the layers and sweep of the tinted woods;
- Along the trail: walking slowly, see the leaves' changing colours set against the rocks;
- Against cloud seas: on a clear dawn with a sea of cloud, coloured woods and clouds share the frame.
How to arrange
- With crisp air, enter early and stroll slowly; soft morning light is best for views and photos;
- The mountain is windy and cooler, colder at dawn and dusk — bring a jacket;
- Travel off-peak and book ahead; weekends in season are busier.
Note
Autumn colours depend on the year’s climate — take the actual scene as it is; care for the plants, do not break branches, and leave the beauty for others.
