Fanjingshan at Frost’s Descent: deepening autumn and a rising chill

Around Frost's Descent, the Mountain's Colors Deepen

Around Frost's Descent, the autumn colors of Fanjingshan grow deeper by the day. As temperatures drop, the mountain forests shift from green to yellow, and from yellow to red, the layered woods gradually taking on color. Because elevations differ and tree species vary, the timing of the color change also differs, and the whole display lasts for a period, so there is no need to worry about missing a particular day. On a clear autumn day, climbing high and gazing far to see the layered forests fully dyed in color is a rare pleasure.

There are several ways to take in the autumn colors: climbing high and looking far is the best way to feel the layers and grandeur of the dyed forests; walking slowly along the trails lets you observe up close how the colors of leaves and branches set off the mountain rocks; and if you catch a clear morning sea of clouds, the colorful forests and the clouds framed together have a charm all their own. With crisp autumn air, it suits an early park entry and a slow, leisurely stroll, and the soft light of the morning is best for viewing and photography. Autumn colors are affected by the climate of the year, so the actual conditions on site prevail; please care for the plants and do not pick or break branches, so that the beauty remains for more people to enjoy.

Cooler Morning and Evening, Leave Room in Your Clothing

Fanjingshan sits at a high elevation, with an obvious temperature difference between the summit and the foot of the mountain, abundant cloud and mist, high humidity, and fast-changing weather. Around Frost's Descent the temperature difference between morning and evening grows, the mountain is cold and windy, and mornings and evenings are chillier, so bringing a jacket is very necessary. Autumn has clear skies and fresh air, a good season for watching the sea of clouds and the sunrise; with a large day-night temperature difference, an outer shell plus a warm layer is advisable.

  • Original ID card (real-name entry);
  • Rain gear, a warm jacket, non-slip shoes;
  • Plenty of drinking water and a small amount of dry food; supplies on the mountain are limited.

Before setting out, please check the day's forecast and pay attention to opening and cableway operating conditions. Mountain weather is changeable; in case of thunderstorms, strong winds and other weather, some areas may be temporarily closed, so please follow the on-site notices.

Mushroom Rock: A Landmark Wonder Worth Slowing Down For

Mushroom Rock is the most representative rock landscape of Fanjingshan, named for its mushroom-like shape. It is large on top and small at the bottom, with a nearly square top and a narrower rectangular base; it looks as if it might topple at any moment, yet it has stood on the summit for thousands of years, becoming the "check-in" star in countless visitors' photographs. Mushroom Rock is about ten-plus meters tall, formed of sandstone and slate, large above and small below with its center of gravity toward the top, a peculiarly shaped formation; around it are also distributed stone-forest landscapes of various shapes such as Eagle Rock, Ten Thousand Scrolls, and General's Head, which set each other off delightfully.

Where did such a wondrous rock come from? The summit of Fanjingshan exposes ancient metamorphic rock strata, with bedding that is nearly horizontal and well-developed vertical joints. Under long-term weathering and erosion, the softer parts gradually peeled away while the harder parts remained, and over time carved out wondrous rocks like Mushroom Rock, "big head, small feet," recording the geological changes of this mountain over hundreds of millions of years.

Mushroom Rock is located in the Old Golden Summit area of the core scenic zone, and can be visited after reaching the core scenic zone by cableway or on foot. Early morning and late afternoon light is soft, and the atmosphere is best when the sea of clouds rolls past. When photographing, watch your footing; the summit is windy and the ground uneven, so do not cross the guardrails or enter unopened areas for the sake of a shot; in peak season crowds are concentrated, so visiting off-peak and yielding to others is recommended.

Viewing Safety and Trip Reminders

When climbing high to view the scenery in autumn, stand firm and hold on, do not climb over the guardrails, and head down the mountain before dark; safety comes first. Weekends in peak season are busier, so traveling off-peak and booking in advance are recommended. The summit weather is changeable with a large day-night temperature difference; before going, please learn about the day's weather and cableway operating conditions, and prepare warm clothing and rain gear.
