Ticket booking (most important)

  • Fanjingshan uses online real-name booking for all visitors — book in advance; on-site ticket sales are not accepted.
  • In peak season tickets are tight and often sell out quickly after release; watch for release times and book promptly.
  • Entry is by time slot — choose a slot that suits you and keep to it.
  • Entry requires your original ID card, so keep it with you.

The route inside (East Gate)

  • ① Ticket check and entry
  • ② Shuttle bus (~20 min) to the cableway lower station
  • ③ Cableway up (~20 min) to the upper station
  • ④ Walkway to the core area / Mushroom Rock (~30 min)
  • ⑤ Old Golden Summit (~20 min from Mushroom Rock) / Red Cloud Golden Summit (~30 min from Mushroom Rock)

The last stretch of the Red Cloud Golden Summit is near-vertical and needs hands and feet — take care and grip the chains; those afraid of heights or short on stamina should judge for themselves.

Packing checklist

  • Documents: original ID card (required for entry).
  • Clothing: windproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes (the summit is about 8–10°C cooler).
  • Protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, rain gear (mountain weather changes fast).
  • Supplies: drinking water, high-energy snacks.
  • Other: power bank (no charging on the mountain), a little cash, non-slip shoes.

Conservation and safety

  • Fanjingshan is a World Natural Heritage site — carry all your litter down and protect the ecology.
  • Do not feed wildlife and do not pick plants.
  • Follow site rules and do not enter undeveloped areas.
  • On steep sections, make sure you are steady before taking photos.

FAQ

Do I need insurance to visit Fanjingshan?
Climbing is a moderately demanding outdoor activity, and whether to buy insurance depends on your situation and plans. Choosing suitable outdoor or travel insurance is advised to add a safety net; if you have particular health conditions, consult a professional before you go.
Is it safe to visit Fanjingshan alone?
Yes, but plan and prepare: book ahead and fix your itinerary, keep to open trails and established routes, tell family or friends your plan and stay reachable; climb within your limits, descend before dark and carry a power bank, warm clothing and common medicines. Seek staff help nearby if something happens — safety first.
Can I bring my own trekking poles?
You may bring your own trekking poles; they help ease the knees and keep balance on slippery sections. Choose a light, adjustable pair and stow them as required on the shuttle and cable car to avoid disturbing others; you can ask on site about renting, but bringing your own is more flexible.
How long does a visit take?
Via the East Gate, the round trip by shuttle and cable car plus the core area usually takes most of a day to a full day; allow more if there are queues. From the West Gate the hike takes longer still — often a full day or an overnight stay.
