Fanjingshan in spring: dove tree blossoms and azaleas in turn

Spring flower highlights: dove trees and rhododendrons

Fanjingshan preserves an ancient subtropical primeval ecosystem and is rich in rare plant resources. In late spring and early summer, the dove trees come into bloom, their white bracts hanging from the branches like flocks of white cranes or white doves fluttering through the forest — a truly moving sight. The dove tree is an ancient plant from the age of the dinosaurs, and Fanjingshan has a remarkable expanse of dove tree forest, with large areas of dove tree distribution found here.

In spring, the rhododendrons on the mountain also bloom in succession, adding bright colours to the verdant forest. Fresh green covers the mountains, set off against striking peaks and strange rocks in crisp layers; wildflowers dotting the forest edges also make fine subjects for photography. During the flower season, please stay on the open trails and do not pick or break the flowers and trees — let the beauty remain on the branches.

When to come and what to see

  • Early spring: the mountains turn green, wildflowers are scattered, and there are fewer visitors — ideal for an unhurried visit.
  • Late spring: vegetation is lush and there are more flowers, and the weather is more stable.
  • Fresh green forests: tender green covers the mountains, set off against striking peaks and strange rocks in crisp layers.
  • Shifting clouds and mist: after spring rain the chances of a sea of clouds increase, and early morning often brings surprises.

Spring weather is changeable, so check the forecast before setting out and avoid days of heavy rain and strong wind. Compared with midsummer and deep winter, climbing in spring is comfortable, and visitor numbers are not at their highest.

What to wear and how to walk

Fanjingshan is high in elevation, with a marked temperature difference between the summit and the foot of the mountain, abundant cloud and mist, high humidity, and fast-changing weather. Temperatures on the mountain vary widely, so "layered" dressing is recommended, with a windproof jacket on hand; spring is rainy, so bring a lightweight raincoat and wear non-slip shoes. Enter the park early and walk slowly — early morning, with its soft light, is best for sightseeing and photography.

  • Original ID card (real-name entry)
  • Rain gear, a warm jacket, non-slip shoes
  • Plenty of drinking water and a little dry food; supplies on the mountain are limited
  • Spring has a lot of pollen; those prone to allergies should bring protection

Nature and ecology along the way

Fanjingshan lies in Tongren, Guizhou, and is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains, with a maximum elevation of 2572 m. It is one of the most biodiverse areas at the same latitude anywhere in the world and is known as a "gene bank of biological resources". In 2018, Fanjingshan was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List. It has a well-preserved primeval forest ecosystem at the same latitude, and is also the only habitat of the Guizhou golden monkey.

From evergreen broad-leaved forest at the foot of the mountain to deciduous broad-leaved forest higher up, the vertical vegetation zones are clearly defined. Abundant cloud and mist and relatively plentiful rainfall create the distinctive sea of clouds and Buddha's halo; landmark sights include Hongyun Golden Summit, Moon Mirror Mountain, the Ten-Thousand-Metre Sleeping Buddha, Mushroom Rock, the Ten Thousand Scrolls of Scriptures, Nine Dragons Pool and Phoenix Mountain, which can be combined with your flower viewing.
