Fanjingshan in the rain
Mountain weather turns quickly. Rain is no reason to be discouraged — mist-wrapped hills and murmuring streams have a hazy beauty of their own; the key is to guard against slips and keep a backup plan, with safety first.
Before you go
- Bring a light raincoat (handier than an umbrella on the climb), waterproof or non-slip shoes and a spare dry layer;
- Keep phone and documents dry and carry a power bank;
- Watch the weather and on-site notices; in heavy rain or thunder, adjust or postpone.
How to arrange a rainy day
- Trails are slippery — slow down, hold the rails, and on descents lower your centre of gravity with small steps;
- In thunder, avoid ridges, tall trees and open ground and shelter nearby;
- You can pause in service areas near the gate, tea houses or nearby indoor places until the rain eases.
Safety note
Flash floods come fast in the rainy season — never linger or wade in gullies or river beds; when the weather is severe, put safety first and climb another day.
