Why visit Fanjingshan

Fanjingshan lies in Tongren, Guizhou Province, and is the main peak of the Wuling range at about 2,572 m. Named for “the pure land of Brahma,” it is one of China’s famous Buddhist mountains and is traditionally regarded as the abode of Maitreya. Its lone, cloud-wrapped peak and the Red Cloud Golden Summit rising into the sky have earned it the name “City in the Sky.” Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2018, it is a key natural and cultural landmark of Guizhou.

Highlights

  • Red Cloud Golden Summit: about 2,336 m; a solitary peak split in two, with shrines to Sakyamuni and Maitreya linked by a small bridge — climb for sweeping views over the sea of clouds.
  • Old Golden Summit: the highest point, with open views and a classic spot for sunrise and cloud seas.
  • Mushroom Rock: a natural rock stacked of thin slabs, top-heavy and seemingly about to fall — a signature sight.
  • Cheng’en Temple and Huguo Temple: ancient temples along the way, essential stops for pilgrims.

How to plan

A visit usually takes a full day: take the shuttle from the gate to the cableway station, ride up, then explore the Red Cloud Golden Summit, Old Golden Summit and Mushroom Rock. In peak season, arrive early, book ahead and watch for cableway notices.

FAQ

Is Fanjingshan a Buddhist mountain? What temples are there?
Fanjingshan has been a Buddhist mountain since ancient times and is traditionally associated with Maitreya, with old temples, halls and cliff inscriptions among its religious sights, and twin shrines joined by a bridge on Red Cloud Golden Peak. Please respect the rules of religious sites: dress modestly, keep quiet and note on-site signs before photographing.
Does the Red Cloud Golden Summit need a separate ticket?
No, it is included in the admission ticket. The final steps are steep — take care and pace yourself.
Do I have to climb both Golden Peaks?
Both are core sights but differ in difficulty. Red Cloud Golden Peak (New Golden Peak) is a soaring pinnacle climbed by iron chains and narrow steps and is more thrilling; Old Golden Peak is gentler. Choose by energy and time — with limited energy, see one and view the other from afar.
How do I climb Red Cloud Golden Peak and what should I watch out for?
Red Cloud Golden Peak is climbed by iron chain and narrow stone steps, with the Golden Knife Gorge splitting the pinnacle in two and a bridge joining the twin summit shrines — it is steep and thrilling. You climb with hands and feet and queue politely; those who fear heights or have heart or blood-pressure conditions, or are with elders and children, should judge their limits and view from afar. In rain, snow, wind or ice the route is slippery — do not force it, and follow on-site notices.
