Why bird-watch here
Situated in the subtropics with dense forest and varied habitats, Fanjingshan is a home and stopover for many birds. Forest birds and waterside birds each find their place, and quiet watching often brings surprises. Birding is a way to get close to nature — and a test of patience and sharp eyes.
When to come
- Spring: migrants head north and woodland song peaks — a fine time to bird-watch;
- Summer: the forest is lush and resident birds active, easiest to meet at dawn and dusk;
- Autumn and winter: some migrants stop over or winter, and on clear days the views are open and watching easy.
Where and how
- Walk slowly along open trails, forest edges and streams, watching the branches and thickets;
- Dawn and dusk are best — tread lightly and stay quiet;
- Use binoculars; do not chase, feed or play recordings to lure birds.
Birding etiquette
Do not disturb, capture or damage nests and habitats — the basic rule of birding — and keep your distance, avoiding flash, when photographing. Stay within open areas and keep the beauty in your eyes and lens.
