Why bird-watch here

Situated in the subtropics with dense forest and varied habitats, Fanjingshan is a home and stopover for many birds. Forest birds and waterside birds each find their place, and quiet watching often brings surprises. Birding is a way to get close to nature — and a test of patience and sharp eyes.

When to come

  • Spring: migrants head north and woodland song peaks — a fine time to bird-watch;
  • Summer: the forest is lush and resident birds active, easiest to meet at dawn and dusk;
  • Autumn and winter: some migrants stop over or winter, and on clear days the views are open and watching easy.

Where and how

  • Walk slowly along open trails, forest edges and streams, watching the branches and thickets;
  • Dawn and dusk are best — tread lightly and stay quiet;
  • Use binoculars; do not chase, feed or play recordings to lure birds.

Birding etiquette

Do not disturb, capture or damage nests and habitats — the basic rule of birding — and keep your distance, avoiding flash, when photographing. Stay within open areas and keep the beauty in your eyes and lens.

FAQ

When is the best time for bird-watching at Fanjingshan?
Spring, when migrants head north and woodland song peaks, is a fine time; in summer and autumn resident birds are active, easiest at dawn and dusk; in autumn and winter some migrants stop over or winter. Whenever you go, dawn and dusk are best — tread lightly, keep quiet, use binoculars and do not disturb or feed the birds.
What wildlife can I see at Fanjingshan?
Fanjingshan is the only habitat of the Guizhou golden monkey, and its woods also shelter rare animals such as the Chinese giant salamander, white-necked long-tailed pheasant, Temminck’s tragopan and golden pheasant. But wildlife is secretive and meeting them in the wild takes luck. Keep your distance, do not feed or disturb them and do not buy wildlife products — simply observe.
How do I take the shuttle at Fanjingshan?
The shuttle is taken at marked stops as guided, usually with queuing and boarding in order; operating hours and frequencies follow the day. Follow on-site guidance, queue in order, sit steady holding on, and take extra care with children and elders; departure times follow on-site notices.
What times and light are best for views and photos at Fanjingshan?
Dawn and dusk bring soft light and shifting mist — good times for views and photos; on sunny days the noon light is harsh, so favour woodland and close-ups. Check sunrise and sunset times in advance and arrive early to wait for the scene, choose safe spots, stand firm holding the rails and never cross the barrier.
