Summer Sea of Clouds and Mountain Coolness: The Right Way to Hike for Summer Escapes
In midsummer, the heat is strong at the foot of the mountain, yet the summit of Fanjingshan is pleasantly cool. Fanjingshan is located in Tongren, Guizhou, and is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains, with a maximum elevation of 2572 m. Temperatures decrease as altitude rises, and the summit feels noticeably cooler than the foot of the mountain; trails mostly wind through the forest, where the shade brings obvious cooling; summer is rich in moisture, clouds and mist are frequent companions, and the mountain scenery is ethereal. Early morning and evening are especially cool, ideal for unhurried sightseeing.
Fanjingshan lies in the East Asian monsoon climate zone, with cool summers, no severe cold in winter, and humid air; it is a well-known mountain retreat for summer escapes. Abundant clouds and mist and relatively plentiful rainfall also create the unique sea of clouds and Buddha's halo scenery.
Sea of Clouds, Sunrise and Sunset: When Are They Most Captivating
When the sky clears after rain, clouds and mist rise among the mountains, and a magnificent sea of clouds can often be encountered, especially moving at sunrise and sunset. The sea of clouds is most likely to appear after rain clears and in the early morning; shooting through ridges and peak forests gives clear layers.
- Hongyun Golden Summit: You can shoot upward at the steepness of the lone peak soaring into the sky, or from the viewing platform on the opposite side capture the twin peaks and the sky bridge.
- Mushroom Rock: Under side backlight, photograph the layered rock slabs, highlighting the peculiar shape that is large on top and small below.
- Old Golden Summit: Climb high to overlook the mountains and the sea of clouds; the light at sunrise and sunset is best.
- Choosing the light: Early morning and evening light is soft and there are fewer visitors; at noon the light is harsh, so you can shoot rock textures or use tree shadows for composition.
Itinerary Arrangement and Gear Suggestions
Enter the park as early as possible and hike in the morning to avoid the midday sun; alternate sightseeing with rest, and take breaks in the shade or at service areas around noon; if time permits, split the trip over two days and travel slowly without rushing. Summer hiking still requires attention to sun protection and hydration; the mountain is windy and cool, so it is advisable to bring a jacket.
- Prepare rain gear, sun protection and mosquito repellent, and wear light, slip-resistant shoes.
- Walk slowly and hold on where mountain paths are wet and slippery; stay hydrated and go at your own pace.
- A wide-angle lens can capture the grand scenes of the sea of clouds and peak forests, while a medium-to-long telephoto compresses the layers; bring enough batteries and memory cards, as supplies on the mountain are inconvenient.
- It is windy and slippery, so take care to keep equipment from slipping or falling.
Thunderstorm Season: Don't Overlook Safety Details
Summer has frequent thunderstorms; check the weather before setting out. During thunderstorms, do not linger on ridges, under large trees or in open areas; seek shelter nearby promptly and pay attention to cableway operations.
Fanjingshan is one of the regions with the richest biodiversity at the same latitude in the world, home to a well-preserved primeval forest ecosystem at the same latitude, with a substantial area of dove tree forest in the world, and it is also the only habitat of the Guizhou golden monkey. In 2018, Fanjingshan was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List. Noticing the vegetation and living creatures along the trails is also part of this mountain time.
