Labor Day holiday tips: book early and enter in your slot

May Day crowds: book early

The May Day holiday is peak season at Fanjingshan. Expect queues at the mountain gate, on the shuttle buses and at the cable car, and busier trails on the mountain. The scenic area uses real-name reservations for entry, so book and buy your tickets online in advance rather than waiting until you arrive. During peak season, tickets may sell out on site or involve long queues; booking ahead saves a lot of hassle.

When booking, enter ID information that matches the person entering, as entry is verified by ID card. Choose discounted ticket types for students, seniors and children as needed; valid documents are checked at entry. If you plan to cover the cable car and shuttle bus in one go, consider a combo ticket of "main gate ticket + round-trip cable car + round-trip shuttle bus" to cut down on separate purchases.

Pick the right time slot and direction of entry

An earlier time slot is recommended. Crowds flow more smoothly in the morning, and you can largely avoid the cable car and Golden Summit queues around midday. Enter early, climb early, and schedule the main sightseeing for when you have plenty of energy. Leave buffer time in your itinerary so you can adjust the order of visits if queues appear.

  • Decide in advance whether you will enter from the East Gate or the West Gate, and plan transport and routes accordingly.
  • Try to travel at the start or end of the holiday, or on weekdays, to avoid the busiest periods.
  • Queue in an orderly way for shuttle buses and the cable car as directed; don't cut in line or crowd.
  • Head down before dark to avoid being stranded on the mountain.

Transport, accommodation and weather preparation

Allow plenty of time when travelling during the holiday. The earlier you book accommodation and round-trip transport, the more options you'll have. Before you go, check opening status, cable car operation and weather information, and plan your itinerary accordingly; cable car and shuttle bus operations are affected by weather, so keep your schedule flexible.

Walk slowly and watch your footing on slippery mountain paths, and dress warmly. Keep an eye on your companions while queuing, follow on-site directions and visit in an orderly way. Carry your rubbish down the mountain with you; travelling responsibly makes the trip more relaxed.

Slow the pace: a comfortable visit even when it's busy

Safety comes first in peak season, and a relaxed mindset matters even more. Save your energy and patience, and don't insist on covering every spot in one trip. Adjust the order flexibly based on the day's crowds and weather, and the experience is often better. If time allows, weekdays outside the winter and summer holidays and statutory holidays are relatively quieter, with shorter queues and a more relaxed pace, and the mountain mist and forest colours feel more true to themselves.
