Fanjingshan upgraded to a national 5A-rated scenic area

Where Fanjingshan Is and Why It Is Worth a Special Trip

Fanjingshan is located in Tongren, Guizhou Province. It is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains, at an altitude of about 2572 m, and takes its name from "the pure land of Brahma." Since ancient times it has been a famous Buddhist mountain, where ancient temples, cliff inscriptions and fantastic peaks and rocks set off one another, and culture and nature intertwine. In 2018, Fanjingshan was inscribed on the World Heritage List, becoming a shared treasure of all humanity; it was later rated a national 5A-level tourist attraction, and the number of visitors and researchers coming here has grown steadily.

For travellers preparing to set out, the significance of Fanjingshan lies on two levels: first, nature — the mountain rises as a solitary peak wrapped in cloud and mist, with a typical and unique mountain ecosystem and rich biodiversity; second, culture — halls, steles and statues record the marks of different eras, and climbing the mountain to pay respects to the Buddha and to enjoy the scenery go hand in hand here. When visiting, it is worth combining these two threads: admire the strange peaks and seas of cloud, and also read the ancient temples and inscriptions.

Core Highlights: From Hongyun Golden Summit to Mushroom Rock

The Hongyun Golden Summit at the mountain's crest rises straight up and is known as the "city in the sky," the most recognisable sight of Fanjingshan. For a first visit, you can plan your route around the following spots:

  • Hongyun Golden Summit: at an altitude of about 2336 m, a solitary peak soaring into the air, its top split in two, with the Hall of Shakyamuni and the Hall of Maitreya built on each side and linked by a sky bridge; from the top you can look down on the sea of cloud.
  • Old Golden Summit: the highest point of Fanjingshan's main peak, with a wide view, a classic spot for watching sunrise and the sea of cloud.
  • Mushroom Rock: a natural wonder formed by layer upon layer of schist, wide at the top and narrow at the base, seemingly on the verge of toppling — the signature sight of Fanjingshan.
  • Cheng'en Temple and Huguo Zen Temple: ancient temples in the mountain with a long continuity of incense, must-visit places for those climbing to pay respects to the Buddha.

Enjoy the sights within the open areas and take care of the cultural relics and monuments, so that this richness endures.

How to Arrange Tickets, the Cableway and the Sightseeing Bus

Fanjingshan's ticket price usually consists of three parts: the main gate ticket, the basic ticket for entering the scenic area, which requires a real-name reservation; the round-trip cableway from the lower cableway station straight up to the mountainside of the Golden Summit, which saves a great deal of climbing effort and is usually better value as a round trip than one way; and the sightseeing bus connecting the mountain gate with the lower cableway station, the necessary transport for entering the mountain. For peace of mind, you can simply choose the combined ticket of "main gate ticket + round-trip cableway + round-trip sightseeing bus."

  • It is advisable to make a real-name reservation online in advance; in peak season there may be no tickets on site or long queues.
  • When booking, enter ID information matching that of the person entering; entry is verified by ID card.
  • Choose discounted ticket types for students, seniors and children as needed; valid documents are checked at entry.
  • Children under 1.4 m in height usually receive free main gate admission when accompanied by a guardian; full-time students receive a discount on presentation of a student card; seniors receive discounts or free admission according to age group, subject to the scenic area's notices.

The Pace of a One-Day Visit and Entry Tips

A visit to Fanjingshan usually takes a full day: take the sightseeing bus from the mountain gate to the lower cableway station, then the cableway up the mountain, and tour core sights such as Hongyun Golden Summit, Old Golden Summit and Mushroom Rock. In peak season, it is advisable to enter as early as possible, reserve in advance, and keep an eye on cableway operation notices to avoid the afternoon queue peak.

Bring your original ID card when entering and enter with the verification code or ID card; cableway and sightseeing bus operations are affected by weather, so leave some flexibility in your schedule. On this occasion the Fanjingshan tourist area was confirmed as a national 5A-level tourist attraction, becoming the first in Tongren and the 6th national 5A-level tourist attraction in Guizhou Province, with tourism services and facilities continuing to improve. For travellers planning to go, arranging tickets and pace in advance remains the key to a comfortable visit.
