New Year holiday tips: travel off-peak and keep warm

Winter Highlights at the Summit and Weather Features

In winter, Fanjingshan has low temperatures and abundant moisture, and the summit often features snowy scenery and rime. At this time there are relatively few visitors, and the mountains are especially quiet, offering a distinctive serene beauty; on clear days visibility is good, with snow and blue sky contrasting beautifully, making for great photos. The snow-clad forests and isolated peaks are a rare snowy landscape in southern China; when temperatures are low and humidity is high, mist and clouds condense on the branches, crystal clear; the winter summit is also easier to find quiet, suitable for quiet observation and photography.

Fanjingshan is at a high altitude, with the main peak at about 2572 m, the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains. There is a marked temperature difference between the summit and the foot of the mountain, with much cloud and mist, high humidity, and rapidly changing weather. Before traveling, please check the day's forecast and pay attention to road icing conditions; when icy, some sections and cable car operations may be affected.

Entry Arrangements for the New Year's Day Holiday

The New Year's Day short holiday falls in winter, when temperatures on the mountain are low, winds are strong, and some sections may be icy. It is recommended to book online with real-name registration in advance, enter during an earlier time slot, and avoid peak times as much as possible. Winter daylight hours are shorter, so try to enter early and descend early, avoiding being still on the trails after dark.

  • Bring your original ID card for real-name entry.
  • Check the weather and road conditions before traveling and plan your itinerary reasonably.
  • In severe weather or if cable car operations are adjusted, please follow on-site guidance and change your itinerary promptly; safety first.

Staying Warm and Preventing Slipping

Staying warm is a priority for winter visits: a down jacket, hat, gloves, and scarf are all essential, and footwear and socks should be slip-resistant and warm. Winds are strong and temperatures low on the mountain, so also guard against wind and slipping, and keep phone and camera batteries warm. In winter the summit may be icy, so be sure to wear a down jacket, hat and gloves, and slip-resistant shoes; the boardwalks are wet and slippery, so walk slowly and hold on firmly.

  • Essential items: original ID card, rain gear, warm outerwear, slip-resistant shoes.
  • Bring plenty of drinking water and a small amount of dry food; supplies on the mountain are limited.
  • The paths are slippery in winter; do not venture to walk or climb on icy stone steps or near guardrails.

Sky Phenomena Viewing and Safety Reminders

Fanjingshan has a large elevation difference and abundant moisture, and is shrouded in cloud and mist year-round, creating wonders such as seas of clouds, cloud waterfalls, and Buddha's halo. When the sky clears after rain and the mist has not yet dispersed, around sunrise in the early morning and at sunset in the evening, and in autumn and winter when moisture and temperature differences are favorable, such scenes are more likely to be seen. Viewing depends on luck; it is recommended to stay longer on the mountain and observe in several directions.

The summit is windy and cold, so please stay warm and sheltered from the wind while viewing; visibility is low in cloud and mist, so please view within open areas and do not cross guardrails. When photographing a Buddha's halo, letting your shadow fall on the cloud and mist and turning your back to the sunlight makes a ring of light more likely to appear. In severe weather, follow on-site guidance and adjust your itinerary promptly; safety first.
