Autumn and Winter Visiting Tips: Opening Arrangements and Cold-Weather Precautions

As autumn and winter set in, the weather at Fanjingshan turns colder and daylight hours grow shorter, so opening times and cable car operations may be adjusted during certain periods. Before you travel, check online channels for the day's visiting, reservation and transport arrangements, and plan your itinerary sensibly so you don't arrive at the foot of the mountain only to find that the timing or routes don't match your plans.

Cable car operating hours are subject to the day's arrangements. To see the sunrise, you will usually need to stay at the foot of the mountain or nearby the night before and take the sightseeing bus and cable car up early in the morning; to see the sunset, calculate your descent time carefully so you don't get stranded on the trails after dark. If you want to see both sunrise and sunset, consider staying a night at the summit or close to the mountain, but accommodation at the summit is limited, so check in advance.

Warm, Windproof and Slip-Resistant Gear

In autumn and winter the mountain is windy and cold, so bring warm clothing and slip-resistant shoes. The summit is windy with low temperatures, so pay special attention to staying warm and blocking the wind while enjoying the views; early morning and dusk bring low temperatures and dim light, so bring a light source as well. Weather at the summit is changeable with large temperature swings between day and night, so before you go, check the day's weather and cable car operations, and bring warm clothing and rain gear.

  • Warm clothing: for the low temperatures and strong winds at the summit, especially in the morning and evening.
  • Slip-resistant shoes: some sections may be icy, so hold the railings and walk slowly to avoid falls.
  • Rain gear: the summit weather is changeable, so keep it on hand just in case.
  • Lighting: light is dim in the early morning and at dusk, and you'll need it on the trails.

Pacing Your Visit and Safety Reminders

Try to enter the park early and descend early, so you don't remain on the trails after dark. In severe weather or when operations are adjusted, follow on-site guidance and change your itinerary promptly. In thunderstorms, strong winds and similar weather, some areas may be closed temporarily; follow on-site notices.

Visibility is low in cloud and mist, so enjoy the views within open areas and do not climb over railings. When photographing Mushroom Rock, watch your footing; the summit is windy and the ground uneven, so do not cross railings or enter closed areas to get a shot. In peak season crowds concentrate, so visiting off-peak and yielding to others is recommended. When watching sunrise and sunset, face east for sunrise and west for sunset; the summit is windy, so stand firm and hold on.

Take In the Sky Phenomena and Landmarks Along the Way

In autumn and winter, moisture and temperature differences create good conditions; when the sky clears after rain and the clouds and mist have not yet dispersed, the light angles around sunrise in the early morning and at sunset in the evening are just right, making it easier to encounter seas of clouds and the Buddha's Halo. Sightings depend on luck, so it's worth staying on the mountain a while longer and looking in several directions. When photographing the Buddha's Halo, it is easier for a ring of light to appear if your shadow falls on the clouds and mist and you have your back to the sunlight.

Mushroom Rock is located in the Old Golden Summit area of the core scenic zone, and you can visit it after reaching the core zone by cable car or on foot; the light is soft in the early morning and at dusk, and the atmosphere is best when a sea of clouds rolls past. Nearby there are also rock formations of various shapes, such as Eagle Rock, Ten Thousand Scrolls and General's Head, which you can plan time to see as well.
