Fanjingshan Around the Winter Solstice: A Cold, Quiet Winter Day

Around the winter solstice, Fanjingshan enters a cold and tranquil winter. Fewer visitors come at this time, and the mountains are especially still, with sparse vegetation that has a quiet beauty all its own. Under low temperatures and high humidity, snow scenes and rime often appear on the summits, and the striking peaks and unusual rocks look even more rugged against the winter tones, making this a fine destination for those who enjoy peace and quiet. On clear days visibility is good, and the white snow set against blue skies makes for excellent photos.

Winter Highlights: Snow Scenes, Rime and Sea of Clouds

In winter Fanjingshan has low temperatures and abundant moisture, and snow scenes and rime often form on the summits. The snow-clad forests and solitary peaks are a rare snowy landscape for southern China; when temperatures are low and humidity high, mist and clouds freeze on the branches, clear and sparkling. The summits in winter are easier to find quiet on, suited to quiet contemplation and photography, and the atmosphere is especially fine when a sea of clouds rolls through.

  • Snow scenes: forests and solitary peaks covered in snow, the white set against blue skies.
  • Rime: mist and clouds freeze on the branches, clear and sparkling, occasionally coating the twigs.
  • Sea of clouds and quiet solitude: fewer visitors, suited to quiet contemplation and photography.

Trip Preparation, Warmth and Slip Protection

Fanjingshan is high in elevation, with an obvious temperature difference between the summit and the foot of the mountain, abundant mist and high humidity, and fast-changing weather, so please check the day's forecast before setting out. In winter the summit may be icy, so be sure to wear a down jacket, a hat and gloves, and slip-resistant shoes; the boardwalks are wet and slippery, so walk slowly and hold the railings firmly. The summit is windy and cold, so guard against wind and slips, and keep your phone and camera batteries warm.

  • A down jacket, hat, gloves and scarf are all essential, and keep shoes and socks slip-resistant and warm.
  • Carry your original ID card (real-name entry), rain gear, a warm coat and slip-resistant shoes.
  • Bring plenty of drinking water and a small amount of dry food; supplies on the mountain are limited.
  • Try to enter the park early and descend early, to avoid still being on the trails after dark.

Safety Reminders and Itinerary Adjustments

The paths are slippery in winter, so do not walk or climb riskily on icy stone steps or beside railings. Keep an eye on the weather and on icy road conditions; when there is ice, some sections of trail and cable car operations may be affected. Follow on-site guidance when operations are adjusted, and adjust your itinerary promptly in bad weather, putting safety first. When visiting core scenic spots such as Mushroom Rock, the summit is windy and the ground uneven, so do not cross railings or enter closed areas to get a shot; in peak season crowds concentrate, so visiting off-peak and yielding the right of way is recommended.
