Qingming at Fanjingshan: spring outings, flowers and off-peak timing

Around Qingming, the Mountain Looks Its Best

Around Qingming, spring is at its fullest on Fanjingshan. Plants and trees are sprouting across the slopes, wildflowers are gradually opening, and it is a fine season for a spring hike. Most visitors heading up the mountain at this time come for the spring scenery of the season: walking slowly along the trails, watching the fresh green spread out and the wildflowers dot the landscape, with both the view and the mood opening up along the way.

One thing to keep in mind: visitor numbers are relatively concentrated during the short holiday, and queues may form at the mountain gate, on the shuttle buses and at the cableway, while the trails on the mountain are also more crowded. Planning ahead and traveling outside peak times can noticeably improve the experience.

Reservations, Entry and Avoiding Peak Times

Before setting out, be sure to reserve online with your real name and buy tickets in advance, and enter the park during the time slot you selected; accommodation and round-trip transport should also be booked as early as possible, since the earlier you choose, the more options you have. Before departure, check opening conditions, cableway operation and weather information, and plan your itinerary accordingly.

  • Try to travel at the start or end of the holiday or on weekdays, avoiding the most concentrated periods;
  • Enter the park early and start climbing early; foot traffic is relatively smoother in the morning;
  • Queue in an orderly way for shuttle buses and the cableway as directed on site, without cutting in line or crowding;
  • Leave enough buffer in your schedule, adjust the order of your visits promptly when queues arise, and head down the mountain before dark to avoid being stranded.

Spring Hiking: Gear and Pacing

Spring weather is changeable and mornings and evenings are rather cool, so bring a jacket and rain gear; the summit is windy with low temperatures, so warmth is essential. Hike within your limits, stay on the trails, and do not pick or break plants, leaving the spring scenery on the mountain. Before bringing older family members along, learn about their health first; those with chronic conditions such as heart or blood pressure problems should especially assess whether climbing is suitable, and there is no need to insist on reaching the summit.

To save energy, you can use the shuttle buses and cableway to reduce walking distance and climbing; walk at a steady, slow pace, rest often, and carry water, regular medications and warm clothing. Stay together throughout and do not let anyone go off alone; agree on a meeting point, offer a hand and walk slowly on slippery sections, and remind each other to hold the railings at steps; if shortness of breath, dizziness or other discomfort occurs, stop and rest at once, and seek help promptly if it is serious.

Stop by Mushroom Rock

Mushroom Rock is the most representative rock landscape on Fanjingshan, named for its mushroom-like shape. It is large at the top and small at the bottom, with a nearly square top and a narrower rectangular base; it looks as though it might topple at any moment, yet it has stood on the summit for hundreds of years. Mushroom Rock is about ten-plus meters tall and made of sandstone and slate, and around it are other rock formations of varied shapes, such as Eagle Rock, Ten Thousand Scrolls and General's Head.

Mushroom Rock is located in the Old Golden Summit area of the core scenic zone, and can be visited after reaching the core zone by cableway or on foot. Light is soft in the early morning and at dusk, and the atmosphere is best when the sea of clouds rolls past. Watch your footing when taking photos; the summit is windy and the ground uneven, so do not cross railings or enter closed areas for the sake of a shot; during peak season visitor numbers are concentrated, so it is best to go outside peak times and yield to others. In case of thunderstorms, strong winds or other weather, some areas may be temporarily closed; please follow on-site notices.
