What you mainly pay for

The cost of a Fanjingshan trip comes roughly from a few sources: entrance and transport such as the cable car, travel to and fro, lodging, meals and a little shopping. Exact prices and discounts vary with season, ticket type and booking channel — go by the booking page and on-site notices.

Spend where it counts

  • Plan the trip and lodging ahead and avoid the hottest times — often calmer and cheaper;
  • Choose the ticket type you need and confirm what it includes to avoid double buying;
  • Share rides or use public transport to cut travel costs noticeably;
  • Carry water and food to reduce on-mountain purchases.

What affects the cost

  • Season and holidays: peak demand for lodging and transport usually means higher prices;
  • Days and group size: two days add lodging and meal costs over one;
  • Side trips and shopping: nearby sights and specialities add or subtract by your plan.

Note

Check the day's ticketing and discounts online before you go and spend within your means; put the budget into the experiences you truly want and the trip will feel better.

FAQ

Does Fanjingshan have a cableway, and must I take it?
Yes. The cableway runs from the mountainside up to the summit area and saves a lot of effort. Stronger hikers may use the trails, but they take much longer — choose according to your fitness.
What is the “Buddha’s halo” at Fanjingshan?
The Buddha’s halo is a rainbow ring that appears in the clouds opposite the sun after rain clears, with a figure at its center that moves as you move; in certain light a magnified projection — the “phantom” — may appear in thick mist. These are natural wonders of the mountain’s special weather.
How high is Fanjingshan? Will I get altitude sickness?
Fanjingshan’s highest point is about 2,572 m; the Red Cloud Golden Summit is about 2,336 m and the Old Golden Summit about 2,494 m. At this altitude obvious altitude sickness is uncommon, but the summit is about 8–10°C cooler and involves steps — pace yourself.
Is Fanjingshan hard to climb?
Via the East Gate you can use the shuttle and cable car — flexible, quicker and less demanding; but you still climb high-altitude steps after reaching the top, and the West Gate is a full hike of greater intensity. Choose by your group’s fitness and pace yourself.
