Why Fanjingshan in Late Summer Is Great for Watching Meteor Showers
Every year in late summer, the Perseid meteor shower arrives as expected, making it a stargazing moment that astronomy enthusiasts look forward to. Fanjingshan is located in a mountainous area with clear air and far from city light pollution. On clear nights the starry sky is transparent and bright, making it an ideal environment for stargazing and astrophotography. On clear summer and autumn nights the Milky Way is especially distinct, and the tranquil starry sky adds a layer of romance to the mountain journey. If you happen upon a clear night, the sky here is transparent and bright, perfect for gazing quietly and waiting for a meteor to streak across.
Preparation Before Stargazing and On-Site Precautions
Mountain temperatures are low at night and paths are slippery, so keeping warm and staying safe should come first before setting out. The following points are for reference:
- Always travel with companions, bring warm clothing and a flashlight, and stay in contact with your group.
- Stargaze in open, safe areas where staying is permitted, and do not enter unopened or dangerous zones.
- Whether you can go up the mountain at night and whether overnight stays are allowed are subject to on-site regulations; be sure to find out before you travel.
- Do not use strong lights that disturb others, take care of the nighttime environment, and watch your step to avoid slipping.
How to Photograph the Starry Sky
If you plan to capture meteors and the Milky Way, you can fix your camera on a tripod and focus manually to infinity; use a wide aperture, higher ISO, and longer exposure, and try several sets of parameters to find the right effect. When you need people in the frame, use a soft small light for fill lighting to avoid strong light ruining the image and disturbing others who are stargazing nearby.
Where to Stay for Easier Nighttime Stargazing
The area near the East Gate is where accommodation around Fanjingshan is most concentrated, with everything from resort hotels to distinctive guesthouses. In the core area within about 1 km walking distance of the East Gate, you can walk right into the park, making it suitable for visitors who plan to enter early and catch the first sightseeing bus; the surrounding area about 1–5 km away is quieter, with some resort-style accommodation, most of which provides shuttle service; Jiangkou county town has richer dining and shopping options and is about a 30–40 minute drive from the East Gate, suitable for visitors who find no rooms at the scenic area entrance or who want to stay longer in the surrounding area. In peak season (summer holidays, National Day), quality accommodation is relatively tight, so booking in advance is recommended, and for Golden Week it is advisable to arrange even earlier; before booking, confirm whether the accommodation provides pickup service to the East Gate Visitor Center and the shuttle schedule, and check the actual distance between the accommodation and the East Gate on a map. Prices fluctuate with high and low seasons, so please refer to real-time quotes.
The area around the West Gate has a lower level of commercial development and limited accommodation options, mainly serving hikers, with relatively simple conditions; it is advisable to contact in advance to confirm room availability. Accommodation at the summit area is extremely basic and mainly used for photographing sunrise, sunset, and the starry sky; out of ecological protection considerations, ordinary visitors are not encouraged to stay overnight on the mountain, and camping is prohibited within the scenic area. For ordinary visitors, staying at the East Gate and taking the early sightseeing bus and cable car up the mountain the next day can also provide a very good visiting experience.
