Fanjingshan in winter: snow, rime and a quiet summit

Snow and Rime on the Winter Summit

In winter, Fanjingshan has low temperatures and abundant moisture, and snow scenes and rime often appear on the summit. Under low temperatures and high humidity, clouds and mist condense on the branches, forming crystal-clear hanging ice that contrasts with the green mountains and sea of clouds; on clear days, visibility is good, and the snow-white scenery against the blue sky, with the mountain forests and isolated peaks wrapped in silver, is a rare snow landscape in southern China, also suitable for quiet contemplation and photography.

Since ancient times, Fanjingshan has been known for ten wonders: strange rocks, rare trees, Buddha's halo, sea of clouds, cloud waterfalls, wondrous springs, rare birds, exotic beasts, snow scenes, and heavenly ladders. The winter snow scene is one of them. At this time, there are relatively fewer visitors, the mountains are especially quiet, and touring is more leisurely, offering a distinctive serene beauty.

Keep Warm, Prevent Slipping, and Watch the Weather

The summit has low temperatures and strong winds, and the paths may be icy. Before setting out, please check the day's forecast and road icing conditions; when icy, some sections and cable car operations may be affected. In severe weather, some areas may be temporarily closed; please follow on-site notices, heed on-site guidance, and adjust your itinerary promptly.

  • Keep warm: A down jacket, hat, gloves, and scarf are all essential; pay attention to slip-resistant and warm footwear and socks.
  • Prevent slipping: Wear slip-resistant shoes, and walk slowly and hold on firmly when boardwalks are wet and slippery; do not venture or climb along icy stone steps and guardrails.
  • Wind protection and equipment: Winds are strong and temperatures low on the mountain, so prepare against the wind and keep phone and camera batteries warm.
  • Pace your trip: Enter the park and descend as early as possible, and avoid remaining on the trails after dark.
  • Items to carry: Original ID card (real-name entry), rain gear, warm outerwear, slip-resistant shoes, and sufficient drinking water and a small amount of dry food; supplies on the mountain are limited.

Noticeable Temperature Difference Between Summit and Base

Fanjingshan is at a high altitude, with a marked temperature difference between the summit and the base, abundant clouds and mist, high humidity, and rapidly changing weather. In winter the summit may be icy, so be sure to wear a down jacket, hat, and gloves, and slip-resistant shoes; boardwalks are slippery, so walk slowly and hold on firmly. Compared with other seasons: spring is rainy and humid with cool mornings and evenings, so bring rain gear and a light jacket; in summer the base is hot while the mountain is cool, so wear quick-dry clothing and bring a light jacket, and take care to avoid lightning when thunderstorms are frequent; autumn is clear and crisp, a good season for viewing the sea of clouds and sunrise, with a large day-night temperature difference, so a shell plus an insulating layer is advisable.

The Mountain Forest's Character Beyond Winter

Fanjingshan is located in Tongren, Guizhou, and is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains, with a maximum altitude of 2572 m. It is one of the places in southern China that rose earliest from the sea to land, and the summit still preserves primeval geological wonders. This is one of the regions with the richest biodiversity at the same latitude worldwide, known as a "gene bank of biological resources," and was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List in 2018. The mountain has a well-preserved primeval forest ecosystem at the same latitude worldwide, with a substantial area of dove tree forest, and is also the only habitat of the Guizhou golden monkey.

From evergreen broad-leaved forest at the foot of the mountain to deciduous broad-leaved forest higher up, the vertical vegetation zones are distinct; there are hundreds of vertebrate species, and nationally key protected wild animals include the Guizhou golden monkey, Assamese macaque, rhesus macaque, clouded leopard, musk deer, tufted deer, serow, pangolin, mandarin duck, Temminck's tragopan, golden pheasant, Reeves's pheasant, and giant salamander. Landmark attractions include Hongyun Golden Summit, Moon Mirror Mountain, the Ten-Thousand-Meter Sleeping Buddha, Mushroom Rock, Ten Thousand Scrolls of Scriptures, Nine Dragons Pool, and Phoenix Mountain. Walking among them in winter, the snow scenery contrasts with these rock formations, offering a distinctive beauty of quiet solitude.
