Fanjingshan in the Plum Rain Season: Another Side in Mist and the Sound of Water

As the plum rain season begins, rainfall at Fanjingshan increases, and the mountains are often wrapped in mist with the gentle sound of flowing water. Rainy days do not mean you cannot visit — the mountain scenery in the mist has a hazy beauty all its own. The key is to prepare in advance for slippery conditions and backup plans, put safety first, and then take your time enjoying the mountain colors of this damp season.

Mountain weather changes without warning. Before setting out, check the weather and on-site notices. If heavy rain or thunderstorms occur, adjust your itinerary or postpone the trip in good time — this is the first step for visiting in the rainy season.

Gear Preparation Before Setting Out

  • Bring a lightweight raincoat; it is handier than an umbrella when climbing;
  • Wear waterproof or slip-resistant shoes with a snug fit and good grip;
  • Pack a set of dry clothes to change into promptly if you get wet;
  • Protect your phone and documents from water, and carry a power bank;
  • Travel with companions and stay in contact; carry water and common medicines.

Fanjingshan is high in altitude with steep trails, so it is important to know your own physical condition before climbing. Those with chronic conditions such as heart, blood pressure, or respiratory issues should assess whether the trip is suitable beforehand, go at their own pace, and need not insist on reaching the summit.

How to Walk the Trails on Rainy Days

Trails are slippery in the rainy season. Slow your pace and hold the railings; on descents, lower your center of gravity and take small, slow steps; on narrow paths, do not walk side by side or rush ahead. During peak season there are many visitors — at the stone steps to the summit, please queue and yield, without crowding or pushing. Walk at a steady, slow pace, rest often, and drink water promptly in small amounts. If you feel short of breath, dizzy, or otherwise unwell, stop and rest immediately; in serious cases, ask on-site staff for help promptly.

During thunderstorms, do not linger on ridges, under large trees, or in open areas — take shelter nearby. Mountain flash floods come fast in the rainy season, so never linger in gullies or river channels or wade through water. If the rain is heavy, you can pause briefly in the service area at the mountain gate, teahouses, or nearby indoor places, and move on once the rain eases. In strong wind or dense fog, pay attention to cable car operations and on-site notices, and adjust your itinerary promptly. Note your companions' contact details and meeting point, do not enter unopened areas alone, and descend before dark to avoid being stranded on the trails at night.

Put Safety Ahead of the Itinerary

On rainy days at Fanjingshan, the highlights are the mist-wrapped mountain colors and trails accompanied by the sound of water — and the premise for all of this is walking steadily and safely. When the weather is severe, safety comes first, and climbing another day is no regret. Do your homework, bring complete gear, and slow your pace, and your journey will end on a satisfying note.
