Summer wildflowers and cool forest: fine time for a climb and blooms

Where the Coolness in the Mountains at Midsummer Comes From

In midsummer, the heat is at its peak at the foot of the mountain, yet the forest of Fanjingshan is cool and pleasant. This coolness comes first from the altitude: Fanjingshan is located in Tongren, Guizhou, and is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains, with a maximum altitude of 2572 m. Temperature drops as the terrain rises, so the summit feels noticeably cooler than the foot of the mountain. Second is the shade provided by the forest; the trails mostly wind through the woods, and the temperature drops markedly under the tree canopy. Add to this the abundant moisture of summer and the frequent company of clouds and mist—there are many chances to see the sea of clouds and mist, the mountain scenery is ethereal, and walking through it feels all the more refreshing.

At this time, wildflowers dot the forest edges along the path, making it the perfect season for mountain hiking and flower viewing. Early morning and evening bring comfortable temperatures and soft light, ideal for strolling, enjoying the scenery, and taking photos. Fanjingshan belongs to the East Asian monsoon climate zone, with cool summers, no severe cold in winter, and humid air; it is a well-known mountain retreat for escaping the heat.

Itinerary Planning and the Rhythm of Sightseeing

For a summer visit, it is advisable to enter the park as early as possible and hike in the morning to avoid the midday sun; alternate sightseeing with rest, and take breaks in the shade or at service areas around noon. If time permits, split the trip over two days, touring at a relaxed pace without rushing, and take in the mountain coolness at leisure.

  • Early morning and evening are cool, suitable for walking sections and taking photos.
  • When the midday sun is strong, rest in the shade or at service areas and avoid the hours of intense exposure.
  • Watch for changes in the clouds and mist along the way; in summer there are more chances of sea of clouds and mist, and the mountain scenery is ethereal.
  • Landmark sights include Hongyun Golden Summit, Moon Mirror Mountain, the Ten-Thousand-Meter Sleeping Buddha, Mushroom Rock, the Ten Thousand Scrolls of Scriptures, Nine Dragons Pool, and Phoenix Mountain; plan them according to your energy.

Clothing, Sun Protection, and Supplies

In summer it is hot at the foot of the mountain and cool on the mountain, so wear quick-drying clothing and bring a light jacket, as it is windy and cold on the mountain. Walk slowly and hold on where the mountain path is slippery, and wear light, slip-resistant shoes. Essentials include your original ID card (real-name entry), rain gear, a warm jacket, slip-resistant shoes, and plenty of drinking water with a small amount of dry food, as supplies on the mountain are limited.

  • Sun protection and hydration: When hiking in summer, pay attention to sun protection, drink water promptly, and go at your own pace.
  • Mosquito repellent: The forest is humid, so bring mosquito repellent.
  • Rain gear: Summer thunderstorms are frequent; check the weather before setting out and carry rain gear.
  • Jacket: There is a clear temperature difference between the summit and the foot of the mountain, so a light jacket is indispensable.

Safety Reminders for Thunderstorm Weather

Summer thunderstorms are frequent, so please check the day's forecast before setting out. During thunderstorms, do not stay on ridges, under large trees, or in open areas; seek shelter nearby in good time, and pay attention to cableway operations and on-site notices. With much cloud and mist, high humidity, and rapidly changing weather, walk slowly and hold steady where the mountain path is slippery.

Fanjingshan has a well-preserved primeval forest ecosystem at the same latitude in the world, with large areas of dove trees, and is also the only habitat of the Guizhou golden monkey; its forest coverage is high, with numerous rare animals and plants. When walking through the forest, do not disturb the wildlife and stay on the trails—this both protects the mountain forest and makes your own journey more relaxed.
