Mid-Autumn moon and early-autumn colour: a reunion trip to Fanjingshan

Early Autumn Mountain Scenery and Mid-Autumn Moonlight

In early autumn at Fanjingshan, the summer heat gradually fades and the air turns cool and pleasant. The colors of the mountain forests begin shifting from green to yellow, and the scenery grows ever more beautiful. Visiting during this period lets you avoid the muggy heat of midsummer while also seeing the layered transition of vegetation from deep green to pale yellow.

Around the Mid-Autumn Festival, if the weather is clear, climbing high or viewing the bright moon from a scenic platform creates a special atmosphere and is also a good fit for an outing with family. One reminder: whether you can enjoy the moon depends on the weather that day, so please rely on the actual conditions on the day of your trip, and it is best not to make moon viewing your only plan.

First Decide Which Gate to Enter From

Fanjingshan has two entrance gates: the East Gate (Jiangkou direction) and the West Gate (Yinjiang direction). The two gates are about 75 kilometers apart, and the ways of touring from them are completely different. Before setting out, decide clearly which gate you will enter from, since transportation, accommodation, and time arrangements will all be determined accordingly.

  • East Gate (Jiangkou direction): Has a sightseeing cableway. After ticket check and entry, take the sightseeing bus for about 20 minutes to the lower cableway station, then ride the cableway up for about 20 minutes, and hike the boardwalk for about 30 minutes to reach the core scenic area. Suitable for family trips, travelers with elderly people or children, those with limited time, and visitors whose main purpose is sightseeing. The surrounding area has a full range of visitor centers, parking lots, and dining, along with abundant hotels and guesthouses.
  • West Gate (Yinjiang direction): No sightseeing cableway; the entire route is on foot over about 8,000 steps, and a one-way ascent usually takes 4–6 hours. Suitable for experienced hiking enthusiasts, young visitors with plenty of stamina, and travelers who want an in-depth experience of the primeval forest. Surrounding facilities are limited, and there are fewer accommodation choices.

A simple way to judge: if you are with elderly people or children under 10, choose only the East Gate; if you want to finish the core sights in one day, choose the East Gate; if you want to challenge the full hike and have plenty of stamina, you can consider the West Gate.

Reservations and Avoiding Peak Times for the Mid-Autumn Trip

Visitor numbers rise somewhat during the Mid-Autumn holiday, so it is advisable to book in advance and enter outside peak times. When traveling with family, scheduling entry for an earlier time slot leaves more comfortable margins for the sightseeing bus, cableway, and boardwalk hiking, and also makes it easier to arrange the return trip calmly after descending the mountain.

Family visitors choosing the East Gate can plan their time in the order of "ticket check and entry—sightseeing bus—cableway—boardwalk hike"; those choosing the West Gate need to reserve energy and supplies based on a one-way hiking time of 4–6 hours, and should not pack the itinerary too tightly.

Warmth Preparations for Night and Early/Late Hours

Temperatures on the mountain are lower at night and in the early morning and evening. For moon viewing, please prepare warm clothing and lighting, and pay attention to safety. If you plan to stay for a longer time at a scenic platform, clothing that is easy to add or remove is best, and lighting equipment should be carried with you; watch your step when walking on boardwalks and steps.

When traveling with elderly people and children, warmth and lighting should be arranged in advance for everyone, avoiding long stays during low-temperature periods. Moon-viewing plans can be placed after daytime visits to the core scenic area, and adjusted flexibly according to how you feel and the weather that day.
