Another scenery in the hills

Fanjingshan is rainy, and its streams, waterfalls and deep pools are a moving sight. Water changes with the season and rainfall — mighty in the wet season, shallow and clear in the dry — each with its own flavour.

When to see the water

  • Rainy, high-water season: streams and falls run full and loud, at their grandest;
  • When rain clears: mist and vapour weave together, falls half-hidden in a hazy beauty;
  • Autumn and winter low water: less volume, but clear cool water over stones — good for quiet watching.

Viewing and safety

  • Watch from open trails and viewpoints; keep away from slippery cliff edges and pool banks;
  • Flash floods come fast in the rainy season — never linger or wade in gullies or river beds;
  • Rocks are slippery; stand firm and mind your step when framing and shooting.

Listening to water and seeing the hills refreshes the climb; in safety, quietly feel the dialogue between water and mountain.

FAQ

What is the “Buddha’s halo” at Fanjingshan?
The Buddha’s halo is a rainbow ring that appears in the clouds opposite the sun after rain clears, with a figure at its center that moves as you move; in certain light a magnified projection — the “phantom” — may appear in thick mist. These are natural wonders of the mountain’s special weather.
How do I get to Fanjingshan from Tongren city?
Fanjingshan lies in Tongren, some 60-odd km from the city. Reach Tongren first (by rail or air), then transfer by coach or drive to the appropriate entrance. The East Gate (Jiangkou) and West Gate (Yinjiang) are in different directions and far apart — decide your gate first, then plan the route.
How do I book tickets? Can I buy on site?
Fanjingshan uses real-name booking. Book and buy online in advance and enter within your slot; peak-season slots are tight and on-site purchase may be limited. Follow the booking page for availability.
How do I plan for sunrise or sunset at Fanjingshan?
For sunrise, most people stay the night below or near the mountain and go up early by shuttle and cable car; for sunset, work out your descent in time to avoid being on the trails after dark. Face east for sunrise and west for sunset, dress warmly and stay safe on the windy summit. Whether you see it depends on the day — go with an open mind.
