From "Pure Land of Brahma" to World Heritage
The name Fanjingshan carries the meaning of "Pure Land of Brahma," embodying a sense of purity and solemnity. Since ancient times it has been a renowned Buddhist mountain, where ancient temples, cliff inscriptions and extraordinary peaks and rocks set each other off, with culture and nature interwoven here to accumulate a distinctive character. For a very long time it has been a place where nearby people climb the mountain to pay homage to the Buddha and to enjoy the scenery and express their feelings, leaving behind numerous religious relics and legends; the halls, steles and statues in the mountain record the cultural imprints of different periods; praise such as "the foremost of all famous mountains under heaven" also speaks to its standing in people's hearts.
Fanjingshan draws attention for its typical and unique mountain ecosystem and rich biodiversity, and has been inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List, becoming the common wealth of all humanity; it was later rated a national 5A-level tourist attraction, and the number of visitors and researchers coming here grows by the day. When visiting Fanjingshan, it is worth combining the two threads of nature and culture: admire the extraordinary peaks and seas of cloud, and also read the ancient temples and steles. Observe and cherish the cultural relics within the open areas, so that this richness may endure for a long time.
Core Highlights and Visiting Arrangements
Fanjingshan is located in Tongren, Guizhou Province, and is the main peak of the Wuling Mountains, at an altitude of about 2572 m. It takes its name from "Pure Land of Brahma" and is a famous Buddhist mountain in China, traditionally regarded as the bodhimanda of Maitreya Bodhisattva. The mountain mass rises abruptly and is wrapped in cloud and mist, and the Hongyun Golden Summit at the top thrusts up from the ground, hailed as the "City in the Sky." In 2018, Fanjingshan was inscribed on the World Heritage List and is an important natural and cultural landmark of Guizhou.
- Hongyun Golden Summit: at an altitude of about 2336 m, a lone peak soaring into the air, its summit split in two, with the Shakyamuni and Maitreya halls built on each side, connected by a sky bridge; from the top one can look down on the sea of clouds.
- Old Golden Summit: the highest point of Fanjingshan's main peak, with a wide view, a classic spot for watching sunrise and the sea of clouds.
- Mushroom Rock: a natural marvel formed by layer upon layer of schist, broad on top and narrow below, seeming ready to topple at any moment; it is the signature landscape of Fanjingshan.
- Cheng'en Temple and Huguo Zen Temple: ancient temples in the mountain with unbroken incense offerings, must-visit places for those climbing the mountain to pay homage to the Buddha.
