Why everyone wants to see Mushroom Rock

Mushroom Rock is Fanjingshan's most iconic stone formation, named for its mushroom shape. Wide at the top and narrow at the base — the top nearly square, the base a slender rectangle — it looks ready to topple yet has stood on the summit for centuries, a favourite subject for visitors' cameras.

What it looks like

  • Roughly ten metres high, formed of sandstone and slate;
  • Top-heavy and oddly shaped;
  • Nearby, stone formations such as Eagle Rock, the "Scroll of Ten Thousand Volumes" and General's Head complement one another.

How it formed

The summit exposes ancient metamorphic rock with near-horizontal bedding and well-developed vertical joints. Over long weathering and erosion the softer parts peeled away while harder parts remained, carving out "big-head, small-foot" stones like Mushroom Rock that record the mountain's geological history.

Where to see it, how to shoot it

  • It lies near Old Golden Peak in the core area, reached after the cable car or hike;
  • Morning and evening light is soft, and drifting cloud makes the best mood;
  • Mind your feet on the windy, uneven summit — do not cross barriers or enter closed areas for a shot;
  • Peak season is crowded — go off-peak and give way to others.

Tips

Summit weather changes fast with a big day–night temperature swing. Check the day's weather and cable-car status, and bring warm clothes and rain gear; thunderstorms or high winds may temporarily close some areas — follow on-site notices.

FAQ

What is the “Buddha’s halo” at Fanjingshan?
The Buddha’s halo is a rainbow ring that appears in the clouds opposite the sun after rain clears, with a figure at its center that moves as you move; in certain light a magnified projection — the “phantom” — may appear in thick mist. These are natural wonders of the mountain’s special weather.
Is there luggage storage at Fanjingshan?
Main service zones generally offer luggage storage or self-service lockers; whether open and the fees follow on-site rules. Store large bags before climbing to go light, carry valuables with you and check your claim slip when collecting.
What nearby places are worth a visit around Fanjingshan?
Fanjingshan lies in the Tongren area; nearby old towns and streets, hills, villages and local markets are all worth a look, combining the climb with a slow trip. Use your lodging as a hub to link nearby spots and cut back-and-forth; check transport and timetables before you go, visit civilly and spend sensibly.
Does Fanjingshan have a cableway, and must I take it?
Yes. The cableway runs from the mountainside up to the summit area and saves a lot of effort. Stronger hikers may use the trails, but they take much longer — choose according to your fitness.
